His early life was spent at the place of his birth and in 1889 he moved with his parents to Cedar county, Iowa. He was married to Lois A. Brink, December 24, 1872, and to this union eight children were born: Nellie, who died at the age of three months; Cora (Mrs. Ed Smith) who died November 11, 1922; Jesse; Ethel (Mrs. Herbert Hind), Delia, Esther, Clarence and Winnie. In 1875 they moved to Crawford county, Ia., and to Cherokee county in 1876. They went back to Cedar county in 1877, but returned to Cherokee county in 1880, and settled on the present farm from which they never moved till the angel of death called them to their home above. Mrs. Pennington passed away March 6, 1923, just a little over two months after they had celebrated their golden wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Pennington came to Cherokee county before there was any town or railroad where Quimby now stands and they were obliged to ship their goods to Ida Grove and bring them across by team. Today we enter into the heritage which is ours thru the toil and sacrifice, and we lay to rest one of the early pioneers to whom the world owes much. To know W. S. Pennington was to love him. He was as Christian gentleman in every sense of the term. Never in the world's limelight; he was one of those humble souls who like his blessed Master, went about doing good. He lived in the house by the side of the road, and was a friend to man. The world is better because he lived in it. He was an ideal father, a loving husband, a loyal citizen and a friend and neighbor to all. Besides six children, two sons and four daughters living, Mr. Pennington leaves eleven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Angie Lee of Flandreau, S. D., and Mrs. Sadie Gleason of Addy, Washington. Funeral services were conducted at the home and the M. E. church, Quimby, by the Rev. A.,Dyson, and burial was made in the Silver cemetery on Tuesday, June 6, 1925.
