The son of Peter Marye, who located in Culpepper County, and built the first toll gate across the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley, where his son, William Staige Marye, located in 1794. James Marye, the father of Peter, was the first of the family to settle in America, being driven from France by the revocation of the "Edict of Nantes". He first settled on the James at Wonacan, but later settled on the Rappahannock, where Fredericksburg was founded in 1729. His home was built on Marye Heights, made famous by the battle of Fredericksburg. lived at Mundlesville, one Mile south of the present Luray. He, like his father, graduated from William and Mary, where be made a study of languages and mathematics. At the time be came to the county, only the low dutch was spoken. Therefore, he soon procured a quantity of German books and soon became one of the best scholars in the region, speaking both the "Hoch Deustscb and Platt Deustschtf, High and Low Dutch, and was loved by all the German families. He met Mary Ruffner, the daughter of Peter Ruffner, Jr. and Elizabeth Burner Ruffner. In a letter written to his son, James T. Marye, he has the following to say: "Your mother was the most Beautiful lady I think I have ever seen. I lived in Mundlesville when I courted and married her. I visited her father's home for a long time, with much pleasure to myself in my young days." In 1831, he was a member of the Legislature, the year Page County was formed, and took a prominent part in organizing the new county. He was considered the founder of Luray, which was located on the lands of his father-in-law,Peter Ruffner. The main street of the town was first called Peter Street,probably in honor of Peter Marye, father of William Staige Marye, or Peter Ruffner. There is some contention as to how the town received its name. Hon. George Maxye stated in 1927, in a letter, that "The name Luray was given to the town by my grandfather, William Staige Marye. It is an Indian name and has some meaning I have forgotten". Others say it was named for Lorraine in France, while others say it was named for a man by the name of Lewis Ramey.
