Stanley Baker at an early hour on Wednesday morning, Bridgewater has lost one of its best known and highly esteemed citizens. Suffering from a heart condition, Mr. Baker had been in poor health for some years, although his illness confirmed him to his bed only for the past month. Born at Bridgewater 73 yeras ago, he was a son of the late Solomon and Matilda Baker. Mr. Baker, who conducted a harness and leather business on King Street which he established in 1898, was well-known throughout the country for the high quality of his workmanship and his fairness in dealing with those whom he served. Of a kind and friendly disposition, he showed a warm interest in the welfare of young people by whom he was well beloved. He was an active member of the United Baptist Church, a member of LaHave Lodge, I.O.O.F., and the Indepenedent Order of Foresters, also an honourary member of the Bridgewater Fire Department. Surviving are his wife, formerly Miss Laura Fraser, daughter of Mr. Zera Fraser and the late Mrs. Tamar Fraser, Dayspring; a son, Glen Baker of New York, who has been home during his father's illness; and a daughter, Elmore, at home; also a brother, Frank Baker, who has been associated with him in business for the past 42 years. Two brothers, Angus Baker, Bridgewater and Melbourne Baker, Yarmouth; and five sisters, Adella, Mrs. Loring Hawes, Dorchester, Mass.; Annie, Mrs. Ephraim Haines, Bridgewater; Adelaide, Mrs. Clifford Jefferson, Bridgewater; Miss Florence Baker, Boston, Mass,; and Miss Ouida Baker, Bridgewater, died some years ago. The funeral, largely attended, was held at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon from Sweeny's Funeral Home with Rev. D.L. Kennedy, pastor of the United Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements were under auspices of LaHave Lodge, I.O.O.F., and the last rites of the Order were performed at the graveside. The committal service was in charge of G.P. Porter, Junior Past Noble Grand, assisted by Chaplain P.E. Kaulback. Members of the Bridgewater Fire Department attended the service en masse. Hymns used at the service were "Abide With Me" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Bearers were Archie Feindel, W.A. Gow, J.I. Hebb, and H.J. Wentzell. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
