Description	:	Descendant of New England Rev. War patriots; family moved to NH and CT and on to OH. Member of "The Buckeye Rovers," a group of Athens and Meigs County, Ohio men who went overland to California to search for gold in 1849. He returned to Athens in the fall of 1850. William S. Wilson made some and lost more money in the gold fields, eventually selling his claim for $2300; he sold another claim for $1000 and saw the new owners take $50,000 of gold out of it; found a gold nugget worth $1285. Wilson made some and lost more money in the gold fields, eventually selling his claim for $2300; he sold another claim for $1000 and saw the new owners take $50,000 of gold out of it; found a gold nugget worth $1285. He formed a partnership in the gold fields with Asa Condee and two other men. He fought four years in the Civil War in Co. H 36th Ohio Infantry, emerging as a Lt. Colonel, and returned to an illustrious career in Athens Co., OH as a probate judge, sheriff and eventually mayor of Athens, OH. He was also a marble manufacturer at one point. In the 1870 census two jail prisoners are listed in his household! He was married twice. He was one of the last remaining Buckeye Rovers in the waning years of the century and held reunions with Banks, Armstrong and Stedman. He was frequently quoted in newspaper articles about his adventures in the gold fields. In several sources he is listed as William T. Wilson; Paper Trail (OCTA)and other sources list him as William S. Wilson.
