"Bill" Berwert, 74, Topeka, died Monday 9, 1992 at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Berwert was a yardmaster for Union Pacific Railroad before he retired in 1979. He served in the 103rd Division in the Army from Nov. 13, 1942, until Oct. 20, 1945, including service in the South Pacific during World War II. He was born March 10, 1917 in Topeka, the son of Valentine and Anna Marie Walters Berwert, and spent most of his life in Topeka. Mr. Brewert was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and United Transportation Union and was a former member of North Post No. 400 of the American Legion. He was married to Eva M. Applehanz May 30, 1941 in Topeka. She survives. A son, Gary Lee Berwert, died in February 1950. Another son, Patrick Michael Berwert, was killed in action in March 1968 in the Vietnam War. Other survivors include a daughter, Barbara Berwert, Topeka; a son, Michael P. Berwert, Tucson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home. North Post No. 400 will conduct graveside services at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Berwert will lie in state after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where a parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday.
