Is a native of Henry county, Kentucky, and was born January 25, 1827. In 1831 he moved with his parents to Edgar county, Illinois, where he was raised, helping to clear a large farm in a heavily-timbered country. In 1855 he came to this State and located at Vandalia, Jasper county, where he was engaged in hauling goods from Keokuk to the former place. In the spring of 1859 he made a trip to Pike's Peak but returned to Vandalia in October of the same year. He resumed his former occupation of teaming and followed it until the breaking out of the war. September 28, 1861, he enlisted in company E, Fourteenth Iowa infantry, and served until January, 1864, when he was honorably discharged. He veteranized for three years or during the war. During his service he was promoted orderly-sergeant of his company and at the battle of Shiloh was captured, April 6, 1862, and sent to Memphis, remained in the hospital there four days, thence to Mobile, Alabama, where he remained two weeks; was again moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, remained about six weeks and then went to Montgomery, where he was paroled. He was sent north to the Union lines and from there to the parole camps at-St. Louis, Missouri. Remained here about one month, when he took a "brush furlough" and came home. Was exchanged November 8,1862, and soon returned to the front and went into camp at Columbus Junction, Kentucky. He was in eleven hard-fought battles, beside numerous skirmishes, viz: Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Ft. Derusha, Pleasant Hills, Alexandria, Old Town, Louisiana, Yellow Bayou, Old Town, Mississippi, Rolla, Missouri, Fort Davis and Canton Station. He served until the close of the war and was discharged August 4, 1865, at Davenport. After returning home he followed farming until September, 1874, when he came to Altoona, and in July, 1875, formed a partnership with M. Madagan in the lumber business. In the spring of 1876 he sold his interest to Mr. Madagan and started a yard on his own account, which he kept until the spring of 1879 and then sold his stock. Since that time he has been engaged in the grain and stock business. Was married October 10, 1867, to Eliza J. Stallcop, born October 3, 1834, in Hillsborough, Ohio. By this union they have three children: S. E. (born May '10, 1869), A. E. (born December 13, 1872) and W. F. (born April 2., 1874). All living. Ingle of this place, who has been an invalid for the last four years, while in a despondent mood, due perhaps to his failing health, and the loss of much money and proper- ty during the last few years, com- mited suicide on last Monday night while the other members of the fami- ly were asleep by first cutting his throat with a razor, afterwards shooting himself with a 38 caliber revolver, the shot aroused the family, and his daughter, rushing to to her fathers room, discovered her father wounded and bleeding. The gash caused by the razor would it is thought, not have proved fatal, but he was so desirious of death that he used the revolver inflicting a serious wound, the ball passing through his stomach, lodging in his body. Dr. C. C. Lang was at once summoned but upon arrival, it was seen medical aid could be of no assistance other than to relieve his sufferings, as Mr. Ingle's condition was such as not to endure probing for the ball. He lived in this con- dition until Tuesday night. W. T. Ingle was born in Henry county, Kentucky. January 25, 1827, died at his home in Altoona January 8, 1901, aged 73 years, 11 months, and 18 days. When very young he moved with his parents to Illinois, to a thinly settled part, here Mr. Ingle was raised to manhood, and with his brothers assisted his father to clear a heavy timbered farm. In the year 1855 he came west settling in Jasper county, Iowa, near Vandalia, where he soon became the owner of a large amount of real estate. When the war of 1861 and 1865 broke out he was among the first to enlist, and assisted in recruiting company E. of the 14th Iowa Infantry, was made 2nd sergeant, went with this regiment to the south and engaged in the (unreadable) battle at Fort Donnelson, Tennessee. The next battle of the 14th was at Shiloh, one of the largest battles of the war, here his regiment was cap- tured at 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the front line, at the place called "The Hornets Nest," was taken to Corinth, Tennessee. Mr. Ingle was very sick when cupturud, was placed in a rebel hospital and cared for by the Sisters of Charity. While in the prison pens, he contracted scurvey and nervous prostration. He got to St. Louis in the fall of 1862 and by spring had so improved that he again went into the field and joined Gen. Sherman in his march across the state of Mississippi engaging in many battles. Mr. Ingle went with the 14th up Red River, was in eleven hard fought battles, and under fire fifty-two days, served in the war 4 years and 13 days, during which time he was promoted to Oderly Sergeant, for leading his company in a charge at Yellow Bayo, Louisiana, in driv- ing the rebels from a strong covered position in a thick woods, he was wounded six times during his service, returning home in the year 1865 to Prairie City where he lived for 10 years during which time he was mar- ried to Eliza J. Stallcop on October 10, 1867, to this union three children were born, two daughters and one son, all of whom are now living and mourn the loss of a kind father. In the year 1877 he moved with his fam- ily to Altoona, where he lived until death called him across that dark river. After moving here he became engaged in the lumber business which he followed for about 14 years. He did much toward the building up of the town. At one time was the owner of a large number of houses. Mr. Ingle was a well read man, spent much of his time in reading, and his most loved book was the bible of which he was an earnest follower having united, with the Church of Christ several years ago. The funeral services were held at the Church of Christ on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Has- tie after which the remains were followed to the Altoona cemetery by a large concourse of friends where they were tenderly laid away to await the resurrection morn.
