Farmer and Stock raiser, worthy citizen of this township is a native of Madison County, Kentucky and was born on the 16th of June 1836. His parents were L. D. (Lawrence) and Cynthia Phelps Long. Former native of Virginia was born in 1809. He (L. D.) was shot at his residence by a party of bushwhackers, July 21, 1864. The mother of W.T. was a native of Madison County, Kentucky. After they were married they settled in Madison County, Kentucky and here the mother died in 1838. The father was married the second time, and then moved to Chariton County, Missouri in 1847. William spent his boyhood days and received his education in Chariton County, Missouri and worked on a farm till February 2, 1862. When he enlisted in Co. B, 6th Regiment Missouri Militia and did scouting duty in Missouri till March 1, 1865. He was mustered out at St. Louis then returned to Clinton County, Missouri and was married to Miss Eliza (Elzira) Allnut, a native of Clinton County, Missouri, born December 17, 1839. She was the daughter of N. H. and Esther (Parker) (Parks) Allnut, who were natives of Madison County, Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Long came to Nodaway County in 1868, and settled where they now reside. Their family consists of 7 children; WD (Walter Dade) Born September15, 1867 Hester Bell Born July 24, 1869, Thomas N. (Newman) Born April 12, 1871 C. A. (Cynthia Anna) November 27, 1872 Maggie (Margaret) Born September 15, 1874, Frederick Born May 15, 1876, Elgivia Born February 23, 1878. Notes: I believe that Elzira is Elzira Henderson daughter of Newman Henderson and Esther Parks. Elzira was married to Hiram B. Allnut, who was born in Kentucky on 24 May 1960 and they are living with his parents Daniel and Huldy (Sutton) Allnut in the July 1860 census for Haynesville Post Office, Jackson, Clinton, Missouri. He died June 7, 1962 while serving in the Civil War as a Pvt. Co. B, Reg. 6 Missouri Calvary. He accidently shot himself. He was buried at Village Cemetery, Lathrop, Clinton, Missouri; The US government purchased the tombstone. Elzira married William Thomas Long, 2 December 1866 in Clinton County, Missouri. The 1880 Census for Green Township, Nodaway, Missouri shows Hiram B. Allnut as the stepson of William Thomas Long. Obituary of William Thomas Long Death of Thomas Long Thomas Long, an old pioneer settler of Nodaway County died at his home two and a half miles east of Quitman Thursday evening after suffering for a long time with a cancer. He was well known throughout this section of the country and was seventy-eight years old at the time of his death.The funeral services were conducted at Quitman, Friday afternoon, at two o'clock.
