As we approached Carbon, Engineer Cole whistled for the station. We were going about 25 miles an hour. We saw a man down the track and kept getting closer to him, finally the engineer whistled again. The man on the track looked around, but kept right on down the track. This time he paid no attention. by this time I saw something was wrong and motioned to him. I think he saw me. I saw the train was going to strike him and got over on the middle of the pilot to try and shove him off and I think I hit him first. I think the pilot beam struck him. He was thrown about fifteen feet down a ditch. We ran about the length of ten cars and stopped and went back for his body. We found him head downward. Shelley's head was crushed and neck broken. At the inquest held Monday evening, Coroner Heady and Jurymen John Elliot, Wm. Seabury and Lee McCants, returned the following verdict: "We do find that the deceased came to his own death by being struck by Wabash freight, No. 96 near Carbon station, Davis County, Iowa May 15. We exonerate the crew of said train from all blame in the matter." The train crew consisted of T.C. Coulter. conductor; S.J. Cole engineer; A.V. Hensey and L. Burgher, brakeman and R.W. Lodge, fireman. Shelley's remains were taken to Campell's undertaking rooms and remained until Tuesday when interment was made in the Dunnville cemetery. Shelley was born in Lick Creek township, Davis county, Iowa and was past fifty years of age. He is survived by his mother Polly Ann Shelley, A brother Wile Shelley, residing in Ottumwa and one sister, Mrs. Will Wheaton, of near Pulaski. His mother is blind. Residents of Carbon, acquainted with the deceased, stated that he drank a great quantity of water on the afternoon of his death, indicating that he was feverish.
