Description	:	Commander (Ret.) William Thomas “Tom” Amen served in the U.S. Navy, enlisting on February 10, 1941, serving until his honorable discharge and retirement on June 30, 1962. He was a highly decorated veteran receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, six Air Medals, WWII Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, two Navy Unit Commendations, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, American Theatre Service Medial, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a highly decorated veteran receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, six Air Medals, WWII Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, two Navy Unit Commendations, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal, American Theatre Service Medial, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was the first U.S. Navy flier to shoot down a Russian MIG shortly after the start of the Korean conflict. Tom was killed in a plane crash on Fickle Hill on September 6, 1962. Employed by his uncle, Les Pierce of Pierce Flying Service at Murray Field, he was flying Steven Newman and Alfred Fadel in Fadel’s plane when it clipped the tops of two pepperwood trees and crashed into the hillside on Fickle Hill. All three men were killed instantaneously. Experienced pilots examining the wreckage noted air controls were set in their proper positions for an approach. Theory indicated a faulty altimeter reading may have put the aircraft lower than the instruments indicated causing the crash. Tom was survived by his wife and four children of Eureka. He was preceded in death by his parents, Viola and William Amen.
