Apperson of Pleasanton passed away in his sleep April 2nd after a short illness. He was born in San Francisco to Randolph W. Apperson and Frances Adelaide Smith on November 4, 1924. He lived his early years in Pleasanton. In the 1930's his father was hired as the ranch superintendant at the Hearst Castle. He moved with his parents to San Simeon, Ca, where they resided for the next 30 years. Bill graduated from the San Rafael Military Academy, and attended U. C. Berkley as a journalism major. When WWII broke out he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as an encoder. After his service in the Navy he extended his education at Cal Poly San Louis Obispo in the Animal Sciences and Range Management fields. He returned to Pleasanton to work and manage his father's cattle ranch in Sunol. After returning home he showed in both English style jumping horses and Short Tail Hackney Pony Driving. He earned many awards during his career on the show circuit that took him across the United States. Bill was a multitalented man and enjoyed photography. This interest led him to Parson's school of design in New York where he pursed Architectural and Interior design. His design career included being manager for Scalamandré's west coast studio in San Francisco. He later opened his own design business, and. he was the designer of many fine homes and businesses in the San Francisco and East bay area. Bill met his future wife, Ann, on a United Airlines flight to Honolulu, Hawaii. They married in Nevada on March 6, 1963. Bill and his new wife settled in Pleasanton to raise their only son Flint. Bill was a founding member of the Amador Livermore Valley Historical Society. He was the president of the board from 1974-1977 and remained as a board member until his death. In 2010 he was honored for his service with the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Award for significant and lasting contributions to the history and historic preservation in our community. The museum on Main has also honored Bill for his service through the Bill Apperson Scholarship Fund that is awarded to local high school graduates. In the 1990's Bill was invited to be a member of the board of directors of the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation and remained a member until his death. He served as President for many years. As Chairman Emeritus he donated his time and knowledge for preservation of artifacts in and on the castle grounds. Bill was very proud of his heritage. It pleased him that Pleasanton School District named an elementary school in honor of his Grand-Aunt Phoebe Apperson Hearst. For many years he and Ann were invited as guests to the annual fund raiser, and gave their support to the schools latest activity. Bill had many hobbies including tennis, gardening, golf, and dominos. Bill is survived by his loving wife Ann and son Flint of Pleasanton. Per his request there will be no service. Bill will be truly missed by those who knew him best.
