| Description | : | A son of William W. Darnell Sr. and Priscilla Jane Thurman. He married, first, Lettice Walter about 1852 in Illinois. They had six children. He served in Company A and E of the 14th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. Based on enlistment his service included battle of Shiloh, TN (April 6-7, 1862). The 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa comprised 4/5ths of the troops in "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh.
