It probably came from a collection of obituary clippings that were compiled into scrapbooks by residents of the county and now held at the Wayne County Genealogical Society in Corydon, Iowa.] William Walker Roe was born June 15, 1889 at Derby, Iowa, and passed away Nov. 26, 1958 at National City, Calif., while on a visit in the home of his daughter, Ruth. He reached the age of 69 years, 5 months and 11 days. Most of his life was spent in Humeston community, where he grew to manhood and gained a host of friends. On Oct. 2, 1900 [this is a mistake -- 1930 census indicates the date was approximately 1910], he was united in marriage to Olive Helt and to this union seven sons and four daughters were born. Three of the children preceded him in death. As a young man he accepted Christ as his saviour and united with the First Baptist Church of Humeston, where he remained a member until the time of his death and helped to support the work of the church. For several years she served as director of the schoolboard of Richman Township and in addition he was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge. In the year of 1947, he sold his farm home and moved to Humeston where he and his wife continued to be active almost to the very last days of his life. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Olive Ester Roe of Humeston, three daughters, Mrs. Edwin Richman of Moorland, Iowa, Mrs. Ruth Rutledge of National City, Calif., and Mrs. Marie Crawford of Des Moines, five sons, Harold of Humeston, Melvin of Des Moines, Wayne of Albert, Elbert of Des Moines adn William of Indianola, three brothers, Carl of Sonoma, Calif., John of Denver, Colo., and Leonard of Iowa City, one sister, Mrs. Goldie Teater of Corydon, twenty-three grandchildren and one great grandchild as well as many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 30 from the First Baptist Church in Humeston with Rev. B. E. Nielson officiating. Mr. Gilbert Garton sang accompanied by Emogene Kinnear. Flower girls were Mrs. Nell Roe and MRs. Marie Swainey. Pallbearers were Keith Richard, Forest Richard, Daryl Carter, Rex Williams, Lawrence J. Sponsler and Olen Sheets. The members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 121 of which he was a member and attained the rank of Noble Grand, performed the graveside ritual. Mr. Ivan Havner, chaplain and Mr. Art Roe, present Noble Grand of the lodge in charge. Interment was in Green Bay Cemetery in Humeston.
