Bill was born in Russia in 1885, the son of Frederick Wallender and Paulina (Buchmann) Wallender. He had moved to Beulah from Freeman, SD. Read More	William Wallender, Sr. and Magdalena Schweigert were married on Dec. 12, 1906, at Otter Creek, ND. Bill was born in Russia in 1885, the son of Frederick Wallender and Paulina (Buchmann) Wallender. He had moved to Beulah from Freeman, SD. Maggie was born and raised at Krem, ND, north of present-day Hazen. She was the daughter of John Schweigert and Sophia (Miller) Schweigert. Through the next 16 years the Wallenders were blessed with seven children, all born at Beulah. Hella was born on Oct. 13, 1907; Arthur was born Aug. 31, 1911; Bill was born Oct. 28, 1913; Herbert was born June 27, 1915; Bertha was born May 19, 1918; Alvina was born April 8, 1920; and Albert J was born April 30, 1922. The Wallenders homesteaded 12 miles south of Beulah on Section 28. They began farming with three horses and a walking plow, which they used to tear up the sod. Their first crop was solely planted into flax. With no fences in those days, the horses roamed freely and were difficult to locate at times. Using sod from the ends of furrows, they built their first one-room house in 1907. It measured 20 feet x 20 feet. They lived under the open sky the first summer and slept under the wagon box when it rained. The sod house was finished in the fall. It didn't have a wood floor in it for three years. When the floor was installed, the walls and ceiling were also wallpapered, completely in New Salem Journals (newspapers). After ten years of farming, Bill decided to move to town and start a garage, which was located at the site of the present-day Beulah Twin Cinema. The garage burned down in 1918; without insurance to cover their losses, they were forced to return to the homestead. Dung the hard economic times of the 1920s and "dirty thirties", they found they could not get ahead financially on the farm. In the fall of 1939 they sold out and moved back into Beulah where Bill worked at MDU. He later worked for Farmers Union Oil Company, which he had helped to organize in the 1930s. He retired in 1957.
