He was born September 25, 1922 in West Port, South Dakota. Bill married Ruby (Olson) in 1944 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1949, Bill and Ruby moved to Walla Walla, Washington for five years before moving to Vancouver, Washington in 1954. They became charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Vancouver, Washington, where they raised their six children. Bill was employed by Safeway for 30 years and retired in 1984. Read More	WILLIAM "BILL" WALTER BACKOUS September 25, 1922 ~ September 2, 2014 William "Bill" Walter Backous, 91, passed away on September 2, 2014 in Vancouver, Washington. He was born September 25, 1922 in West Port, South Dakota. Bill married Ruby (Olson) in 1944 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1949, Bill and Ruby moved to Walla Walla, Washington for five years before moving to Vancouver, Washington in 1954. They became charter members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Vancouver, Washington, where they raised their six children. Bill was employed by Safeway for 30 years and retired in 1984. He enjoyed his family, fishing, gardening, RV traveling, Blazers basketball, and bus trips to Lucky Eagle. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; daughter, Nancy Long; sons, Donald and Randy; granddaughter, Sara (Backous) Mielke; grandson, Christopher Backous; sister, Florence Kleinknecht; and brothers, Emery, Russ and Gene. He is survived by daughter, Cheryl Woodard (Sandy); son, Rick (Sheri); son, Kevin (Patti); 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Sally Dickson. A graveside service was held Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens - Garden of Faith in Vancouver, Washington. A memorial service was held Monday, September 29, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, also in Vancouver, Washington, followed by a light lunch and pie (Bill's favorite dessert). Memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to Messiah Lutheran Church, 905 NW 94 Street, Vancouver, WA 98665. Bill continued to be quick-witted and independent right up to his peaceful departure to be with the Lord, family and friends. He will be greatly missed and his memories will warm our hearts.
