Description	:	William Bill Cope, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Midland Hospice. Bill was born January 29, 1924, on a small farm near Dennison, KS the son of Walter Hatton Cope and Della May Gilliland Cope. Bill attended grade school in a one room school near Holton, KS. He graduated from Holton High School and attended KSU one year before joining the Merchant Marines during WWII. He served on ships in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific from 1943 to 1946. Bill was born January 29, 1924, on a small farm near Dennison, KS the son of Walter Hatton Cope and Della May Gilliland Cope. Bill attended grade school in a one room school near Holton, KS. He graduated from Holton High School and attended KSU one year before joining the Merchant Marines during WWII. He served on ships in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific from 1943 to 1946. His final trip took him around the world. Bill followed that service in the CB Reserves for 12 years. In 1943 Bill married Lois-jo Cope of Topeka. They had met on a 4-H trip several years before. Bill spent many years in steam boiler maintenance at Topeka Country Club, Peacock Laundry, Crosby Brothers and Washburn University. He later sold and appraised real estate, retiring in 1989. Bill and Lois-jo owned many rentals, with Bill teaching his children to remodel and care for them. He was a member of the Wakarusa Masonic Lodge, York Rite and a long time member of the West Side Christian Church. In his spare time he and Lois-jo enjoyed square dancing, playing cards with their many friends and traveling. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Richard and his son, Steven. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lois-jo; daughter, Cheryl and son-in-law, Jim Svetgoff; sons, Rodney Cope, David Cope and daughter-in-law, Karen Cope; sister, Elizabeth, Chicago. Bill is also survived by six grandchildren; two great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Bill was a hard worker, a good provider, loving husband and father. He will be missed. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at West Side Christian Church, 432 Lindenwood Ave, Topeka KS 66606. Funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
