Schirmacher was born on Nov. 24, 1931, at Highmore to William A. and Mae (Wolkenhauer) Schirmacher. He grew up in Madison and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1949. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1958. He married Beverly Symons on Nov. 1, 1953, at Mooresville, Ind. They lived in California and Oregon before moving back to Madison in 1967. He drove a truck for Midwest Coast, Bill and Gene's and Carlisle Plastics before retiring in 1993. After retirement, he worked part-time as a volunteer policeman and for the city of Madison. He was a life member of the Madison VFW. Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Madison; two sons, Mark (Rose) of Lynd, Minn., and James (Sandy) of Viborg; two daughters, Geri (Clellie) Lembcke of Madison, and Gwenn Nevland of Wolf Point, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six sisters, Jean (Paul) Lambert of Vancouver, Wash., Mryna (Don) Sterns Mt. Shasta, Calif., Carol (Bert) Verhey and Victoria (Ed) Madison, both of Madison, Sharon (Dave) Daniels of Fallbrook, Calif., and Mary (Earl) Cole of Fargo, N.D.; and a half-brother, John Raschdorf of Maine. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and granddaughter in infancy, and a sister.
