Description	:	Billy McCrary was a Bombardier aboard B-29 as a member of the 679th Bomb Squadron, 444th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing, XX Bomber Command during WWII. On September 8th 1944, the plane he was flying in (42-6234 - "My Assam Dragon") was participating in a mission to Mukden, Manchuria and was hit by enemy fire. Captain John Overton was the pilot. On September 8th 1944, the plane he was flying in (42-6234 - "My Assam Dragon") was participating in a mission to Mukden, Manchuria and was hit by enemy fire. Captain John Overton was the pilot. The enemy fire caused the ship to depressurize and cut the rudder cable. When the rudder cable was shot away, the pilot temporarily lost control of the ship, causing it to leave formation. As soon as the pilot regained control and started climbing back to formation, the propeller on #1 engine began running away and the engine caught on fire. The fire was extinguished in about 30 seconds, but the propeller kept running away making it impossible for the plane to keep altitude, which then was about 20,000 feet. The plane's position at the time was over water. The crew was told by Capt. Overton to prepare to bail out. As the plane neared the coast, four men, including Lt. McCrary, bailed out over water, approximately 10 miles from the shore line in Liaotung Bay, northern China. None of the four men were ever found, and were presumed drowned.
