Has No Children Willis Barker b: 1861 in Michigan ==================================================== from Valerie Mahoney **** (as posted on Ancestry.com) About Twenty-five years ago, I sent for the Civil War Pension records of my 2 times great grandfather, Smith Buel Barker. In the papers was an affidavit written by Smith Buel Barker in 1913. In this affidavit, he lies about his age and place of birth. He also says that his father's name was Benjamin Willis Barker. My grandmother told me that she remembered her grandfather having difficulty with his pension and that there was a threat to take it away because he had lied about his age when he joined. The affidavit seems to be about this since he writes that he was born on Sept 11, 1843 when he was actually born in 1847. He also says that he was born in Manlius Twp, Allegan County, Michigan when he was in fact born in Franklin, Oakland County, Michigan. There are two other sheets in the packet that do show that research was being done to verify S.B. Barker's correct age. One sheet is from the Bureau of the Census where the information on the Barker family from the 1860 census is listed - along with statement that the family couldn't be found in the 1850 census. The 2nd paper is dated 1/9/1914 and says it is in reply to the Commissioner of Pensions in D.C. to his letter and questions from Dec. 26th, 1913. Barker was asked the names of his brothers and sisters who were living at home with his parents when the 1850 census was taken. Barker says that he can't answer that and although he tried to find out, he couldn't. He says that he was too small at the time to have any clear recollection as he must have been only 7 years old at the time. (Ha! more like 3!) Why I ever believed that his father's name was Benjamin Willis Barker rather than just Willis Barker when I saw through the other lies, I don't know. Clearly this was just another ploy to throw the investigators off course. The next mistake I made was to share this Benjamin bit with others. I may have had it on my Ancestry tree for awhile. I have found no evidence that Smith Buel Barker's father was named Benjamin Willis Barker. All written records for him - other than the above named affidavit say simply, Willis Barker. It is very frustrating to me to see so many public trees on Ancestry using the name Benjamin Willis Barker because I feel that it is may fault that the name has been spread. No other tree using the name Benjamin Willis Barker has shown any source information to support the name. If you read this and you have used the name Benjamin Willis Barker for the man who fathered Smith Buel Barker, I urge you to remove the "Benjamin" from the name on your tree. ============ Note: stone says Willis Barker
