Description	:	Mr. Willis "Bill" Sowers age 84 of 130 West Greenhill Road, Mt. Airy, NC passed away at his home Sunday, May 22, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 28, 1926 in Carroll County, VA to the late Cana Nelson and Lou Emma Ann Willis Sowers. Airy, NC passed away at his home Sunday, May 22, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 28, 1926 in Carroll County, VA to the late Cana Nelson and Lou Emma Ann Willis Sowers. He was the founder of Sowers Construction Company, Inc. and was active in the business until his death. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. Mr. Sowers was a member of the American Legion Post 123 and the VFW Post 2019. He was of the Presbyterian Faith. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lu Ann Snider and husband, Arlie, Mt. Airy, a son and daughter-in-law, Willis Richard "Rick" Sowers and wife, Judy, Cana, VA, six grandchildren, Penny Willard and husband, Bobby, Abby Seaver and husband Jody, Richard Sowers, John Snider, Ryan Snider and wife, Jenna Goldstein and Neal Snider and wife, Natalie Sierra three great grandchildren, Samantha Willard, Isabella Willard, and Sylvia Felisa Snider, a sister and brother-in-law, Mavis Meredith and husband, Grant, Fancy Gap, VA, three half sisters and brothers -in-law, , Nora Alice Martin and husband, Bedford, Martinsville, VA, Jo Ann Combs and husband, Lavern, Cana, VA and Jessie Lee Puckett, Mt. Airy, NC, two half brothers and sisters-in-law, Nelson Sowers and wife, Hortense, Horse Pasture, VA and Manuel Sowers and wife, Ann, Roanoke, VA, two brothers-in-law and Roger Strickland and wife, Bennice, Fancy Gap, VA and Jack Critz, Mt. Airy, and a sister-in-law, Emma Snow, Hillsville, VA, numerous special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sowers was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 39 years, Carrie Mae Strickland Sowers and two sisters, Iris Critz and Jean Gulledge. The family would like to express a "special thanks" to special devoted care givers, Angie Edwards Woodruff. Lois Edwards, Betty Snow and Bobby Willard and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wendell Horton and Rev. Stewart Childress. Burial will follow in the Bluemont Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard VFW Post 2019 Mt. Airy and VFW Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends 5-9 pm Tuesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Bluemont Presbyterian Church c/o Elmo McAlexander, 2406 Excelsior School Rd., Laurel Fork, VA 24352, or to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 123 Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Road, Mt. Airy, NC or to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
