J. Merrick Manor in Fremont. Willis E. (Bill) Wheatley was born June 22, 1904 at Vinncenes, Ind., to Charles and Laura (Katt) Wheatley. He moved with his family to Nebraska when he was four years old. He attended Winnebago School. He spent nearly all of his early years in northeast Nebraska. He moved to Dodge County in 1943 where he spent the remainder of his life. He spent the greater part of his adult career in law enforcement, spanning nearly 43 years, as town marshal of Uehling and eight years as Dodge County Deputy Sheriff. Uehling honored him by naming the city park in his honor. Willis married Ruth Stewart of Waterbury, July 22, 1925 in Madison. To this union six children were born. She died in 1971. He was a member of First Congregational UCC Church in Uehling, the Nebraska Peace Officers Association and the Dodge County Sheriff's Association. Survivors include three daughters. Mona and husband Lyle Thielfoldt of Herman, Janice and husband Hershel Nuzum of Hooper, and Betty Strand of Uehling; three sons and daughters-in-law, Willis and Jean and Les and Janet, both of Reno, Nv; and Joe and Debra of Renton, Wa; a sister Fae Kostel of Phoenix, Az; 18 grandchildren, 28 great- grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son-in-law, a great granddaughters, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Friday at First Congregational UCC. Rev. Mark Hanna officiated. Burial was in the Baptist Cemetery in rural Hooper. Casket bearers were Devan Thielfoldt, Les Spry, Bradley Petersen, Barry Petersen, Jeffrey Taylor, Jay Wheatley, Jerry Strand, Jon Strand, Denny Krohn, Billy Wheatley and Blake Wheatley. Memorials may be sent to the Church or to Willis Wheatley Park.
