Broadway, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Gillespie was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Cambridge, to George and Ila (Hill) Gillespie. He graduated from Moline High School. On Nov. 9, 1942, he married Rose Supancic in Moline. Gillespie served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He was in the 101st Engineering Battalion stationed in the Philippines during World War II. A coal miner, Gillespie worked as a heavy equipment operator for P&M Coal Co. for 26 years and then for Gulf Oil Co. for five years. He retired in 1979. Gillespie was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, West Mineral, and then Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Pittsburg. He was a member of Clarence Smith American Legion Post 272, Weir, and the former American Legion Post 349, West Mineral. He was a member of St. Bridget's/Scammon Knights of Columbus and had served on the West Mineral school board until the schools were consolidated. He then served on the USD 247 board for many years. His wife died Feb. 12, 1993. Survivors include two daughters, Becky Duncan and Debbie Clawson, both of Pittsburg; a brother, J.W. Gillespie, Moline; a sister, Freda Needham, Wichita; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
