Willis John Haider was born September 20, 1945, in Redfield, South Dakota to Peter and Margaret (Appel) Haider. He was baptized in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Zell, South Dakota and attended Catholic School in Zell for eight years before moving to the Redfield area, graduating from Redfield High School in l963. On September 13, 1969, Willie married Marny Trowbridge at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Redfield. To this union twin daughters, Shawn and Dawn were born. Willie was a member of the National Guard out of Huron, South Dakota and honorably discharged after six years. He was a carpenter, builder, woodworker, and master craftsman at best and he made great homes for many loving families all of his life. He was always adding improvements to his daughter’s homes, most of the time shaking his head with a smirk, “I’ll do it, but I’m not gonna like it.” He was a perfectionist and his attention to detail was impeccable. And for the last 11 years, he worked in the fall of the year combining for Steven and Mary Swanhorst by Chelsea, South Dakota. He loved that job. But more importantly, he enjoyed the Swanhorst family, and thoroughly enjoyed hunting with them on their land every year. Willie was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He traveled to Paonia, Colorado for 20 years for elk hunting with his good friends, Everett Randall, Bob Tiff, Merlyn Levtzow, Skip Dring, Bud Muellenberg, and Ward Goodell to name a few. Willie and Marny took to the love of travel after retirement. They enjoyed traveling and embarked on many adventures to Hawaii, took an Alaskan cruise and three Caribbean cruises to various islands including Aruba, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados, and San Juan to name a few. They also made stops in St. Louis and New Orleans visiting the Arch, Bourbon Street, and the old plantations. They had a great time and made countless memories with Willie’s sister Margie and her husband Norman. Willie also became a Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast and traveled to Sturgis with so many of his good friends every year for many years. We won’t talk about the stories here, but we’ve seen pictures. He acquired many Harley Davidson shirts throughout the years, went through six different Harley Davidson motorcycles, and finally gave it up after knowing there were “crazies” on the road, but more importantly, the profound love of his grandchildren became his new focus and love in life. Family was extremely important to Willie and he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren, going to their activities and taking them fishing. Willis is survived by Marny, his wife of forty-nine years; his daughter Dawn (Tim) Weelborg and their children, Matthew and Andrew of Brookings; his daughter Shawn (Jason) Even and their children Jack, Macy and Miles of Brookings; his sister Margie Kobriger of Blanchard, Oklahoma; and his sister Shirley Johnson of Aberdeen. He is preceded in death by one brother and his father and mother, Peter and Margaret Haider; mother-in-law, Vyonne Trowbridge; father-in-law, Robert Trowbridge; and brothers-in-law Norman Kobriger and Wyatt Johnson.
