LOGAN, Ia. -- Willis L. Stern, 77, former chairman of the Iowa state republican central committee, died at his home here late Thursday night following a paralytic stroke. Mr. Stern, who had been ill for several weeks, was widely known throughout the state. He had been active in politics in western Iowa many years and had held several official county posts. He was born in a log cabin in the old Harris Grove settlement, near Logan, June 11, 1860, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Stern. His lather was the first Harrison county weather reporter for the government. On his death the son took over the duties which still remain in the Stern family. A granddaughter, Amy Ann Stern, Logan, is now the weather reporter. In 1884 Mr, Stern became a deputy sheriff of Harrison county, later serving as deputy county treasurer, deputy auditor, a member of the school board. He also filled various city offices. For several years he was express clerk in the old Union Pacific transfer station in Council Bluffs. On Dec. 25, 1892, he married Nellie Gilchrist of Dunlap, Ia., and the following year joined J. C. Milliman in forming the abstract firm of Stern and Milliman in Logan. Milliman was lieutenant governor of Iowa under Gov. M. Shaw. Later the firm became the Stern Abstract Company. He was still associated with the firm. In 1926 he was elected chairmen of the Harrison county republican central committee, which position he filled for two years. In 1928 he was elected chairman of the state republican committee and held the post until 1932. Once he sought the nomination for congressman from the seventh Iowa district but was defeated. He had been delegate from Iowa to the national republican conventions in various years and in 1928 headed the delegation. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Glen H. Stern, Burlingame, Calif., and Andrew G. Stern, Aberdeen, S. Stern, 77, prominent republican, who died at his home here Thursday night, were held at the Yeaman Funeral Home in Logan, Sunday at 2 p. m. Bishop W. R. Adams of the Latter Day Saints, assisted by the Rev. J. G. Reinhardt, of the local Presbyterian church, conducted the services.
