Description	:	Willis "Bill" Shannon, 86, of Gilmore City died Friday, March 2, 2007 at the Rolfe Care Center, Rolfe, Iowa. Mr. Shannon was cremated and he will be buried in the Logan Cemetery, Logan, Iowa at the convenience of the family. Friends may pay their respects Thursday, March 8, from 6-7 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home in Gilmore City where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Harris Funeral Home of Gilmore City is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Shannon was cremated and he will be buried in the Logan Cemetery, Logan, Iowa at the convenience of the family. Friends may pay their respects Thursday, March 8, from 6-7 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home in Gilmore City where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Harris Funeral Home of Gilmore City is in charge of arrangements. Bill was born June 19, 1920 in Logan, Iowa the son of Lee and Blanche Shannon. He attended the Logan Schools, graduating in 1938. He attended Tabor Junior College from 1939-1941 and graduated from Parson College in 1943 with a math and science major. He attended the U.S. Naval Midshipmen School at Notre Dame and was commissioned an Ensign USNR in September of 1943. He was trained in gunning and spent World War II as a liaison officer with the 29th Division and 6th Division. He landed on Omaha Beach with the infantry D-Day and directed naval gun fire in support of the assaulting troops. After the beach head was established he left for the South Pacific and landed with the assault infantry in the Philippines. After World War II, he entered the teaching profession. He taught at Epworth High School, was principal at Oakland Nebraska High School, and acting principal at Bartlett, and for 33 1/2 years was a classroom teacher at Gilmore City Bradgate Community High School. Through the years he has taught Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and General Science. Mr. Shannon is survived by a niece Mary Ann Lewis of Modamin, Iowa. Preceding him in death are brothers Albert, Harold and Max. ****** Willis R Shannon survived by brother Harold W. Shannon’s daughters , Patricia Ann Shannon Blais, Parsippany, NJ; Meghan-Morgan Shannon, West Chester, PA and Priscilla Ann Shannon Aztec, New Mexico.
