Colusa Herald, 28 December 1926 MAN DIES AFTER CAR TURNS OVER NEAR MAXWELL Injured when the automobile in which he was riding turned over and caught fire near Maxwell, Thomas Mullis of Delevan died at the Woodland clinic Saturday evening. The accident occurred Saturday afternoon. Miss Wilma Lausten was driving the car. The machine ran off the edge of the highway, it seems. When Miss Lausten tried to regain the pavement again the car skidded and turned over. Mullis was pinned down by the auto and it was with trouble other autoists who stopped were able to free him. The car was blazing then. Mullis’ skull was fractured, his leg was broken and he was hurt internally. Miss Lausten is suffering from three broken ribs and possible spinal injury. Miss Lausten is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Lausten of Maxwell. Mullis went to Maxwell about five years ago with his brother, Raymond Mullis, from Tennessee and has made his home on the G. R. Corbin ranch at Delevan where he had many friends. He leaves his mother and sister of Los Angeles, another sister, Mrs. Lee Sutton and brother, Raymond, at Delevan. Mullis was in the Rainbow division in the World War. Funeral services will be held for Mullis at Maxwell today under the auspices of the Maxwell American Legion post. (Note: the next day the newspaper reported Thomas was driving, not Willmah - on Thomas' memorial, this cemetery). Colusa Herald, 16 July 1927 LICENSE ISSUED Raymond B. Mullis of Delevan and Miss Wilma Lausten of Maxwell were issued a marriage license Monday at Red Bluff. Mullis gave his age as thirty. Colusa Herald, 25 August 1927 MAXWELL News Mrs. William Lausten and Raymond Mullis drove to San Francisco Sunday to be with Mrs. Mullis who is at the St. Francis hospital, Mrs. Mullis was operated upon Monday for a broken back which has caused her much trouble since she was in an automobile wreck. Colusa Herald, 15 November 1927 MAXWELL News Mrs Raymond Mullis, who has been a patient at the St. Francis hospital for several weeks, returned home last week. She is still in a cast, having had two vertebrae grafted following an automobile accident early last year. Colusa Herald, 17 December 1927 SHINBONE IS USED TO PATCH BROKEN BACK Mrs. Hattie Steuart was in town today from Delevan. Her granddaughter, Miss Wilma Mullis of Delevan, who was injured in an automobile accident last Christmas, is recovering nicely. Several months after the accident it was discovered that three vertebrae had been fractured in Miss Mullis' back. Before that time it was believed she had suffered no serious injury. She was immediately taken to the St. Francis hospital in San Francisco for treatment. Four months ago she was operated on. A piece of her shin bone was taken out and grafted in her backbone in place of the injured vertebra. Dr. Stephens and Dr. Davis performed the surgical work. Miss Mullis is still in a cast and will be for some time but she is making a remarkable recovery. Colusa Herald 23 April 1930 The Misses Nelda Lausten and Willie May Lauston, cousins, held an evening party at the Raymond Mullis home at Delevan last Friday evening.
