She was born on Aug. 21, 1938 to Charles and Wilma Sampson in Wenatchee, Wash. From an early age, Laura spent many hours on her grandparent’s, Stephen and Mary Rhodes, dairy farm and orchard just south of Okanogan. Going on her fathers’ logging forays also fostered her love of the outdoors and wildlife. On Sept. 1, 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, Larry Gillespie. The young couple lived in Seattle while Larry served in the Army and Laura worked at Boeing. Their goal of returning to raise their family on an orchard in the Okanogan Valley was realized in 1968 when they were able to purchase her grandparent’s farm. Their family enjoyed waterskiing, fishing, hunting and spending hours every year looking for the perfect wild Christmas tree. Laura was a smart, confident and hard-working business woman and was a true partner to Larry. She was a strong Catholic mother who was a great positive influence on her children and grandchildren’s lives. Laura loved entertaining; especially large gatherings with family. Laura assisted in hosting and organizing many successful Okanogan High School reunions for both the classes of 1956 and 1958. She was extremely artistic and could make any craft project she put her mind to. She took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens surrounding her home. The couple enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends, but Laura’s favorite places always involved the ocean. Laura served as the Washington State Patrol Okanogan Detachment’s Office Assistant for 18 years before retiring in 2004. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Laura is survived by husband, Larry; two sisters, Joan Bykonen and Diane Hoeschlerand their 4 children; John (Suzan) Gillespie, Moses Lake, Wash., Lisa (Bob) Kathleen (Gillespie) St. Ledger, Warrenton, Va., Brent (Kari) Gillespie, Okanogan, Wash., and Dawn (Bryant) (Gillespie) Blake, Spokane, Wash., as well as eight wonderful grandchildren. A rosary vigil will be at 6 p.m. Feb.17, 2016. A funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 18, 2016 with graveside services and light dinner following.
