Wilma was born June 12, 1925, to Gustav and Ida (Wolff) Beck on their farm seven miles north of Eureka. She grew up with four brothers, including two who were much younger. She took a year of high school by correspondence to stay home and help take care of them. Like other farm girls, she worked in the field and the house. She attended Spring Creek No. 4 and then Eureka High School, graduating in 1942. She then taught for two years at Spring Creek No. 3. She married Emanuel Haupt on Oct. 1, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The wedding reception was at her parents’ farm, where her father had cleared out a grainery for a place to dance. They settled on Emanuel’s parents’ farm 12 miles northeast of Eureka in Detmold Township, raising Charlois and Angus cattle, pigs and chickens, and corn, wheat and other small grains. When her children were small, Wilma read to them, especially from the children’s Bible. She was a 4-H leader and Bible school teacher. Wilma enjoyed farm life and always helped with the farm work. She and Emanuel were active in the Soil Conservation Service and planted many trees. Among her talents were soap-making, wine making, butchering and preserving meat, and sewing clothes for herself and her family. Wilma made many quilts and crocheted pieces. She could crochet names and made hundreds of them, some for her family, and many others for a shopkeeper in Nebraska. They were matted and framed and hang in many homes around the country. Wilma was a member of the Germans from Russia Historical Society and knew the history, customs, language, families and places of the Eureka area. She grew up less than a mile from both sets of her grandparents and had more than 60 first cousins. She corresponded with relatives seeking information about her family and her husband’s family, and for several years kept records for the Wolff family. She kept dozens of family scrapbooks and enjoyed showing them and talking about the people and times they portrayed. Wilma was one of the Eurekans interviewed for an oral history project by a representative from the North Dakota State University Germans from Russia Heritage Collection. Wilma was concerned that as her generation passed away people would forget how to speak German the way “our people” spoke it. In 1978, Wilma and Emanuel sold the farm and moved to Eureka. For a few years Wilma helped care for the Peter and Dr. Susan Ostrowski children. She and Emanuel took part in many church and community projects and events. Wilma had a big flower garden and a big vegetable garden. She said when she worked in the garden, all her worries went away. She was a longtime member of the Eureka Garden Club and won many flower show prizes. She and Emanuel also traveled, including trips to Nashville and the Canadian Rockies. But their favorite trips were getting in the car and driving around the country side in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and wherever else they visited. When she traveled, Wilma noted the condition of the fields and crops, the trees and flowers, the livestock and wildlife. She believed wherever you went, there always were interesting and beautiful things to see. The first church Wilma attended was Friedens Lutheran eight miles north and a mile east of Eureka. It was a satellite of Zion Lutheran, of which she was a devoted lifelong member. She was a member of WELCA. She appreciated its Bible studies and often helped in the kitchen and with flowers for the church. She loved to work with the women who sewed quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Wilma was a member of Eureka Hospital Auxiliary and the Eureka Pioneer Museum board. She wrote poetry and until her most recent illness, read the newspaper every day. Emanuel died on Jan. 9, 1997, and Wilma sold their home and moved to a senior apartment. She often enjoyed lunch at the Senior Citizen Center. She stayed active for as long as she could, despite many health challenges and a profound hearing loss. She lived at assisted living and then moved to the nursing home. She enjoyed doing puzzles and taking rides in the country, especially ones that ended with a stop for ice cream. Wilma is survived by four children, June (Charles) Pariano, La Quinta, CA; Gerald (Patricia) Haupt, Eureka; Paulette (Mark) Tobin, Grand Forks, ND; and David (Denise) Haupt, Kearney, NE; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Lori Haupt, Rapid City; Clayton (Kathy) Haupt, Prescott, WI, and their children, Payge and Jacob; Shandra (Troy) Bergt, Lincoln, NE; Brittany Haupt, Omaha, NE; Brant Haupt, Lincoln, NE; and Emily (Tyler) Tupa, Rapid City, SD, and their daughter, Julia; one step-granddaughter, Regina (Travis) Kruger of Dunedin, FL, and their children, Paxton, Paisley and Porter; two brothers, Delbert (Sharon) Beck, Rapid City, and Gordon (Kathy Yttreness) Beck, Sioux Falls; three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Beck, Eureka; Gladys Beck, Sioux Falls; and Florence Haupt, Rapid City; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gideon Beck and Marvin Beck; two sisters-in-law, Violet Beck and Hildegard Haupt; and two brothers-in-law, Otto Haupt and Edwin Haupt. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
