Wilma Blanche (Bryan) Billars was born May 9, 1914 on a farm three miles south of Stickney, SD to Hugh and Cora (Brown) Bryan. In 1920, the family moved to Vivian, SD, where they resided for thirteen years before returning to the farm south of Stickney in 1933. Wilma graduated from Vivian High School in 1931. She then attended Southern Normal at Springfield for two years receiving a State Elementary Certificate. Continuing her education by later earning a BA Degree from Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell. In 1933, she began teaching at the Weis School in Truro Township, Aurora County. She taught eight years in the rural schools of Truro and Aurora Townships before accepting a position as seventh and eighth grade teacher in the Stickney Public School, where she taught for thirty-two years. After forty years of teaching, she retired in 1976. All of her students were special to Wilma and her memory of student names and years in her class were exceptional. Wilma Bryan and Melvin Larsen were married in June 1938. He passed away in September 1957, after a long illness. In December of 1959, she united in marriage to Robert Billars and was joined with Robert's four children. They continued to live in Stickney until and after retirement. They loved to travel and spent many winters in McAllen, TX. Robert passed away in 2005. Wilma then moved to Mitchell, where she was living at the time of her death. Wilma was known for her beautiful paintings, lovely flowers, and prolific gardens. Grateful for having shared in Wilma's life: one son, Dr. Thomas (Lynda) Billars of Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, Janice (Harold) Pecenka of Mitchell, SD and Dr. Karen (Daryl) Heusinkveld of Colleyville TX; one daughter-in-law, Frances Billars of Littleton, CO; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Merle Bryan of Portland, OR; two sisters, Ina Harvey of Greybull, WY and Hazel Drake of Hillsboro, OR; along with several nieces and nephews. Wilma was preceded in death by: her parents; her two husbands; one son, James Billars; two brothers, Harold and LaVerne Bryan; and one sister, Mary Humeston.
