She was preceded by the following: Lonnie, Lorena, Bessie Johnson, Myrtle Huckabee, Vernelle Crout, Lura Harley Cook, Horace, Edward, and Boyd Sharpe. Thankful for her godly life she lived are her children: Terry Kinard (Sandra); Keith Hall-man (Dianne); Glenn Elliott (Sunnie Gail); and Pamela Collette Knight (Eddie); her ten grandchildren: Leilani (Jerrod) Warden, Marci (Tee) Newman, Sandy (Matt) Drawdy, Richie (Ashley Kannaday) Pound, Kit (Leigh) Pound, Toya (Gene) Chang, Stuart (Chelly) Pound, Chad (Renee) Pound, Olivia (Daniel) Speares and Preston (Carrie) Knight; and 21 great-grandchildren. Known affectionately as "Nana," she served a lifetime in church, social, and political activities. In the 1950s, she and Kinard opened one of the first restaurants in Gaston, the W&K Lunch, just a few doors down from the caution light in the heart of Gaston. During the 1970s, she founded Wilma's Fashion Shop and operated it successfully for many years. She was employed for twelve years at Lexington District Four Adult Ed and volunteered at Lexington Medical Center. She was a member of the Lexington County Home Demonstration Club, Swansea Lions Club, charter member of Sandy Run American Legion Auxiliary Post 156, a lifelong active member of Gaston First Baptist Church, and the Joy Sunday School class. For over forty years, Wilma was hostess to the Pound Family BBQ on the Fourth of July, opening her home to as many as 200 who came to enjoy the food and bluegrass music by Junior Lucas and his companions. It is said that she never met a stranger; she had hugs and kisses for everyone. To her, the telephone was man's greatest invention because it helped her communicate with others whom she loved. It cannot be estimated the number of cakes she baked for others; in fact, after a stroke and loss of complete use of her hand, she summoned someone who knocked on her door to come take a cake out of the oven for her. She lived and served the Lord by doing for her family, her church, and others. Visitation will be at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Gaston First Baptist Church, 121 Oakey Springs Rd., on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11a.m. with Rev. Laneir Singleton presiding and Rev. Dr. Bill Paulling and Rev. Dr. Ken Sandifer assisting.
