Dennis Arndt of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Latimer, officiated. Mrs. Sernett died July 28, at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton. She was born July 20, 1905, in Waltham, Minn., to Henry and Louise (Petrie) Berghoefer. The family moved to Ventura farm when she was 12, then to West Gate, and finally to Hampton. She attended Hampton High School in preparation for nurses training. In 1928, she graduated from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Hampton and attended State Teachers’ College of Iowa, Cedar Falls, and the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. She was licensed as a registered nurse in 1929 and entered the private nursing practice. In 1942, she married Lee Sernett, and after raising four children returned in 1949 to nursing part-time, working at the Franklin County Hospital. In August of 1951 she became the night nurse, working the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, working in the obstetrical department. In 1974, Mrs. Sernett was nominated for the Mother of the Year for the State of Iowa by the Hampton Women’s Club and the E. C. D. Federated Club. A year later she retired from active nursing duty, but kept busy volunteering at the hospital and nursing homes. Mrs. Sernett was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the church’s Martha Circle, and the Hampton Women’s Club. Survivors include two daughters, Laureen Viness, Las Cruces, N. M. and Mrs. Dorothy Wiekencamp, Glen Elly, Ill; two sons, Milton, Syracruse, N.Y. and Gilbert, Ypsilanti, Mich.; one brother Ed Berghoefer, Hampton, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in April of 1950. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.”
