Wilma Irene Francis was born on April 26 1914 near Onslow Iowa to Julius and Leana Webster Behnke. She attended rural schools in Jones County and married Loren Francis on May 6 1939. They divorced. Her entire life was spent on a farm until September of 1967 when she came to Maquoketa to make her home. She was employed in the housekeeping department at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa for nine years before her retirement. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Maquoketa and the Maquoketa Senior Center where she was treasurer since 1987. She was also a member of the Jackson County Volunteers and the Golden Agers where she was secretary and treasurer for many years. She enjoyed music her home flowers pets playing cards and writing letters. She had penpals around the U.S.A Australia and Canada. She is survived by: 1 Nephew- Wayne Schwartz of Anamosa IA; & 1 Niece- Darlene(Mrs. Darwin) Lyon of Maquoketa IA. She was preceded in death by her parents 2 sisters- Esther Green and Minnie Schwartz & 1 brother in infancy- Willard Carl Behnke. A Wilma Irene Francis Memorial Fund has been established. The Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa is in charge of arrangements.
