Description	:	Wilma Jeanette Van Doorninck was born on August 22, 1906, at Pella, Iowa. She was the second of three children that were born to Martinus and Cornelia (Lubberden) Van Doorninck, her brothers being Frederick and William Van Doorninck. Their grandparents were decendants of Willem and Maaje Lubberden who were among the first settlers in Pella, Iowa. Wilma had a half-brother, Walter Van Doorninck, who was the son of Martinus and Seitska (Jelsma) Van Doorninck. Read More	Wilma Jeanette Van Doorninck was born on August 22, 1906, at Pella, Iowa. She was the second of three children that were born to Martinus and Cornelia (Lubberden) Van Doorninck, her brothers being Frederick and William Van Doorninck. Their grandparents were decendants of Willem and Maaje Lubberden who were among the first settlers in Pella, Iowa. Wilma had a half-brother, Walter Van Doorninck, who was the son of Martinus and Seitska (Jelsma) Van Doorninck. Seitska Van Doorninck passed away before Walter was six years of age and Martinus then married Cornelia Lubberden and they raised their three sons and daughter in Pella. Wilma attended the Lincoln Grade School in Pella and graduated from Pella High School in 1924. During high school she was a member of the girl's basketball team. In 1926, Wilma's cousins, Florence and William van Helden, whose mother was Hattie Lubberden, came to live with Wilma and her mother, Cornelia Van Doorninck, and were raised much like sisters and brother. Wilma pursued her education at Central College in Pella. She graduated from Central College in 1928 majoring in History. She received her Registered Nurses Degree from the Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, Illinois in 1931. Wilma then worked as a school nurse at the public schools in Hammond, Indiana. During high school Wilma had met Arie Cornelius Rempe, a son of Henry and Klazina (Kuyper) Rempe. They furthered their courtship while picnicing with friends on the Des Moines River. Wilma and Arie were united in marriage July 5,1935 at St. James, Minnesota and to this union one daughter, Janice Ellen Rempe, was born on June 15, 1939. Arie was practicing medicine in Cassville, Wisconsin at the time. In 1942 Dr. Rempe joined the United States Navy. Lt. Arie C. Rempe passed away of natural causes on June 28, 1944, at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California at the age of just 39 years. Wilma and Ellen then returned to Pella and lived with Wilma's mother, Cornelia Van Doorninck. They coped with Arie's untimely death with grace, poise and determination. Wilma provided for and fulfilled her responsibilities as a mother and then became the librarian at the Pella Library in Pella, Iowa. Wilma began working as a secretary for the Alumni Association at Central College in Pella in 1950 and became the Registrar in 1952. She held this position until her retirement in 1972. Following her retirement she enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling. Wilma enjoyed exceptionally good health and became a resident in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center in August, 2006. Her needs were met there until she passed away 5 days prior to her 105th birthday on August 17, 2011. Those who will remember her long life are daughter, J. Ellen and her husband, Bruce Hamilton of Somerset, New Jersey; two granddaughters: Mary and her husband, Rene' Giro of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Holly and her husband, Efrain Inurreta of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; four great-grandchildren: Andrew James, Daniel Jared, Jana Marie and Liam Marcus Giro; one sister-in-law, Dorothy (William) Van Doorninck of Denver, Colorado; her cousins, Florence (van Helden) and her husband, Marvin Baker of San Diego, California; and several nieces and nephews. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Arie C. Rempe; her parents: Martinus and Cornelia Van Doorninck; and her three brothers and their wives: her half-brother,Walter and Margarette (Vriezelaar) Van Doorninck, and brothers, Frederick and Wilda (Vander Pol) Van Doorninck, and William Van Doorninck; along with her cousin, William van Helden. Wilma belonged to a number of organizations during her long life, Women's Federated Club, Fortnightly, Central College Women's Auxiliary, and the Pella Community Hospital Auxiliary. She and the late Lois Grooters helped to build the Watergate at Sneek, a favorite family recollection. Wilma had been active in the First Reformed Church as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Moonlight Mission Band, so named because before there were street lights, they only met on moonlit nights. Wilma used to refer to them as the Moonshiners. Wilma was baptized at the First Reformed Church in Pella where she remained a member the remainder of her lifetime.
