Pondera Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Wilma was born March 15, 1907, in Kincaid, Kansas, to Alta Grace (Hollingsworth) and Philip Garfield Hoover. In 1914, her family sold everything in Kansas and moved by train to the Conrad area. Wilma liked to share stories of her Conrad childhood days – her grandmother and aunt managing a store on Burke's Siding at Dry Fork; her dad hauling grain with horses and wagon in the bitter cold of winter; their house with no insulation so she and her brothers had to scrape holes in the frost and ice on the windows to see outside; the all-night square dances held in their home after they moved into a larger and warmer place. She attended Conrad area schools and graduated from Conrad High School in 1928. She went to work as a secretary for W.G. Conrad Insurance. On Nov. 21, 1928, she married Gordon R. Sanders in Choteau. In 1930, she and Gordon had a great surprise when she delivered twin sons. Neither they nor the doctor knew that there was more than one baby. She and Gordon lived and farmed in the Manson Community northwest of Conrad. In 1992, they moved into the Horizon Lodge in Conrad. Gordon passed on July 14, 1994. Wilma loved gardening and was known for her beautiful flowers. She loved to shop and was always immaculately dressed. She was a member of the Manson Community Women's Club, a member of First Presbyterian Church, a 4-H leader, a 63-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, in which she held several offices; a president of the Social Order of the Beauceant; and a floor representative at the Horizon Lodge. She enjoyed many happy times at Duck Lake with family and friends. She loved to travel and her travels included 10 trips to Alaska to visit her son and family – the last trip when she was 102. The day after her son's wedding in Barrow, Alaska, in November 1974, the wedding party, bundled in furs, took a snow-machine ride to Point Barrow, the northernmost tip of land in the U.S. The sun did not rise above the horizon; the temperature was -30° with a chill factor of -50°. Her comment was, "I never had so much miserable fun in all my life!" She loved life. In 2007, she was honored as an official Montana Centenarian at the Governor's Council on Aging. When asked her secret of living a long life she answered, "Good luck, keeping busy, living on a farm most of my life, fruits and vegetables, and exercise." In her 103 years she had seen so many inventions and innovations. Many times she said, "It is a wonderful time to be alive – better doctors, better medication, and better communications – just a great time to be living." Wilma is survived by her twin sons, Robert E. Sanders (Carra Higgins), of Conrad and Donald K. Sanders (Mary), of Homer, Alaska; five grandchildren, Shannon Holdsambeck (Rex), of Missoula, Shelley Freese (Bart), of Miles City, Robert Scott Sanders, of Conrad, Tadd Sanders, of Joplin, and David Sanders (Hester,) of Anchorage, Alaska; nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in law, Barbara Hoover and Evelyn Sanders, both of Conrad; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alta and Philip Hoover; her husband, Gordon Sanders; and her brothers, baby Floyd, Raymond Hoover and Watson Hoover. Memorials in her name are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, 123 4th Ave. S.W., Conrad, MT 59425; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
