Description	:	Wilmer Otis Jensen was the eighth and youngest child of Jens Sorensen and Anne Nielsen Sorensen. The family originated from between the village of Kvissel and the city of Fredrikshaven in northern Jutland, Denmark. Read More	Wilmer Otis Jensen was the eighth and youngest child of Jens Sorensen and Anne Nielsen Sorensen. The family originated from between the village of Kvissel and the city of Fredrikshaven in northern Jutland, Denmark. Wilmer was 5 years old when the bulk of the family immigrated to West Branch, Iowa in 1883. Several of his older brothers had immigrated earlier. He was given the job of carrying a sack of seashells on the journey to remind the family of their home in Denmark and felt bad when they were left behind on the train in the United States. Jens Sorensen had been a farmer, butcher and stonemason in Denmark, and the family also farmed Near Centerdale, south of West Branch. Wilmer married another Danish immigrant, Maren Jensen, on December 30th, 1901 and continued to farm east of Centerdale. A son, Orvald, was born, but Maren soon died of pneumonia on March 2, 1903. Wilmer's orphaned niece, Olga Jensen (daughter of Niels) came and helped Wilmer with his baby son. In October of 1905, W.O. married Maren's younger sister, Ella Jensen, who had immigrated in 1901. They proceeded to have 3 children: Esther A. Jensen Weismann, E. Thelma Jensen Aldeman, and Warren R. Jensen. W. O. and Ella continued to farm near Centerdale, but eventually moved to a large house on the top of "Dane Hill" just up from the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church (now Bethany Lutheran Church) that his father Jens Sorensen helped found in 1895. This was an ideal location for them, as it was close to the church which he was very active in and also close to members of both his and Ella's families, who would drop by for "coffee". W.O. maintained a large garden and was proud of the tools he kept in well-oiled condition in the small barn behind the house. He was very frugal and resourceful, and could always 'make something out of nothing.' He lost most of his hearing in his old age and would communicate using a 'magic slate' board. He entered a nursing home in Iowa City and died on July 27th, 1971.
