Carey, since 1866 engaged in the manufacture of wood-turning machinery, hangers, shafting and pulleys in Lowell, died last night at his home, 98 Mt. Vernon Street, aged 85 years. Wilson W. Carey was descended from early colonial settlers, who were among the original proprietors at Plymouth. He was born Aug. 24, 181 at Lempster, N.H., where he received his education in the public schools and in Lempster Academy. Having little taste for agriculture, he entered in his 21st year, the spinning department of a woolen mill in Amesbury, where his stay was brief. He then went to Nashua, N.H. and worked in a cotton mill about one year. At this time he was induced to abandon this business, and learn the wood-turning trade, engaging his services for eight months for 50 cents a day, but remaining with the concern for two years. He came to Lowell in 1854 and entered the employ of Creaby [?] & Comins, afterwards George T. Comins, furniture manufacturers, in whose service he continued for 11 years. In 1866, he started in business to manufacture wood turning machinery and in 1867 took a partner, G.W. Harris. In 1879 he purchased Mr. Harris' interest. At the present time the business is conducted at Broadway and Mt. Vernon Street under the firm name of the W.W. Carey Co. While actively engaged in the business, Mr. Carey took out a number of patents in his own name. He married Lucia P. Noyes in 1854. She died March 18, 1859 and Mr. Carey married Ellen Augusta Hubbard, Nov. 6, 1861. His first and only child [Annie Flora Carey], born March 9, 1865, married Frank J. Sherwood, one grandchild, Carey Sherwood, being born Aug. 11, 1890. In politics Mr. Carey was a republican. He served as a member of the city council in 1885-86. Mr. Carey is survived by his daughter Mrs. Frank J. Sherwood; one brother, Rufus L. Carey of Acworth, N.H.; and one sister, Mrs. Hannah Griffin of Keene, N.H.
