Read More	The Emporia [KS] Gazette, 23 Mar 1935, Saturday Madison, March 23 -- Winfield Scott Provo, one of two Civil war veterans living in Madison, enlisted in 1863 at the age of 16 in the Eleventh Kansas Volunteer Infantry in Atchison, Kansas. He had seen a good deal of the horror of war, on the border between Kansas and Missouri. He had seen Negroes sold on the block at Independence, Mo., had heard black men and women begging that they might not be separated from each other and their children, and had seen their pleas disregarded. Also, he saw one man who refused to buy any member of a certain family unless he could buy them all. He said he considered it a sin to separate families, and he got the entire family. Mr. Provo saw five men hanged for stealing, all in a row, on the Leavenworth-Atchison county line. He saw Negro soldiers in battle, and said he never saw braver men, or better fighters. He was with his regiment in repelling the Price raid, and in all of its activities until the close of the war. After the surrender, Scott Provo went to Wyoming with United States soldiers to guard the stage lines against Indian raids. He tells of the day that brought news of the assassination of Lincoln, several days after it occurred. The soldiers were in camp and one of them spoke up: "It would have been a damned good thing if he had been killed several years ago." He never spoke again. A volley of shots from every man in the group riddled his body. No one knew whose shot hit first, and no one tried to find out. There was no official inquiry. Mr. Provo was discharged from the service at the end of a year, returned to his home near Atchison, and soon afterward came to the vicinity of Madison, where he has lived ever since. Mr. Provo was born in Hoop-pole township, Posey county, Indiana, in May, 1847. He came to Kansas with his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Luther McDivitt, in 1856 or '57. They traveled behind a yoke of oxen in a covered wagon, all the way from Indiana. Mr. Provo was married to Miss Addie Reed, who lived near Madison, in 1871, and she died many years ago. Of their 11 children, eight are living. They are Mrs. Walter Milner, who lives in California; Mrs. Sam Rockley, Madison; Harry Provo, Sedalia, Mo.; Courtney Provo, Parsons; Ray, Washington state; Mrs. John Rockley, Eureka; Roy, who lives on highway No. 11 north of Madison; Mrs. Hazel Edwards, Parsons. Ned Provo, son of Roy Provo, a grandson of W. S. Provo, is manager of the Emporia Creamery company. Mr. Provo has 36 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was married 20 years ago to Mrs. Sarah Milner, and their home is in Madison. At one time since she has been in the family, says Mrs. Provo, all the Provo children but one family were home to visit their father at the same time, and several families of the grandchildren. For several years Mr. Provo has been a constant sufferer from asthma, unable to do heavy farm work, and for a long time he sold fruit trees and shrubs to the farmers. He peddled fruit trees all over the north end of Greenwood and the south end of Lyon counties, he says, and few persons knew a larger number of the citizens than he. Winfield Scott Provo was born in May of 1848 in Indiana. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Private with Company 'A' of the 11th Cavalry Regiment of Kansas. He enlisted at Ft. Leavenworth, KS on 16 March, 1864 and was discharged at the same place on 26 September, 1865. He filed for his Civil War Pension in 1888. Winfield S. Provo married Addah Elizabeth [Reed] in 1872. At the time of the 1900 US Census, she declared that she had given birth to 11 children, 9 of which survived at that time. Winfield's first wife Addah Provo died in 1906. In 1910, Winfield had no wife but was married to Sarah Elizabeth [Hamilton] by the time of the 1930 US Census. Sarah [Hamilton]'s first husband, James W. Milner (#94994013), had passed away in 1912. Sarah [Hamilton] Provo was still alive at the time of Winfield's death in 1936, when she petitioned the War Department to provide a Civil War Veteran's Headstone for her husband, which they did. Winfield Scott Provo passed away on the 2nd day of September in 1936 at Madison, Kansas in Greenwood County.
