Winnie was a native of Pocomoke City, MD, where she was a member of Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church and a long-time member of the choir. She also served as a member of Church Session and Trustees. Winnie was a native of Pocomoke City, MD, where she was a member of Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church and a long-time member of the choir. She also served as a member of Church Session and Trustees. She graduated from Pocomoke High School and Linden Hall Junior College in Lititz, PA. She graduated from Peirce Business School in Philadelphia, then began her work career at Atlantic Refining Company. She later returned to Pocomoke where she married William "Bill" Small, also a Pocomoke native, and began a journey together in life, love, and business. The young couple assisted in operating Winnie's father's business, R.E. Matthews Ice, Coal, Radios and Appliances. Following the closing of the appliance business, Winnie went on to work at Citizens National Bank in Pocomoke. When Bill opened a Nationwide Insurance office from the family home in Pocomoke in the mid-1960s Winnie joined him working as a bookkeeper for the business. The pair later established WDW, a small finance company, and were partners in Modern Office Supply in Pocomoke. They also owned the Sears catalogue and retail store on Market Street in Pocomoke for a short time while continuing to operate the Nationwide office. After Bill retired from Nationwide, Winnie continued her career serving as part-time church secretary for Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church. Throughout their lives they enjoyed a circle of friends that included the Nationwide families, Rotary Club, Nassawango Country Club and Pitts Creek members. Winnie was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved the Eastern Shore of Maryland and her life in Pocomoke. She was a voracious reader and a patron of the Worcester County Library in Pocomoke. Winnie enjoyed backyard birding particularly during the spring and fall migration. Winnie had a genteel, warm personality and a resilient spirit. She overcame personal challenges that began with the loss of her parents while she was in her 20s. She was a cancer survivor and recovered from several significant health challenges later in life. Throughout her life she found love and strength in her family and valued her time spent with them above all things. She is predeceased by parents Mary and Russell Matthews; husband Bill Small; brother Bill Matthews; and beloved Aunt, Sara Scott Dallas. She is survived by son David and daughter-in-law Cindy of Dover, DE, granddaughter Jessica Burkhardt (Geoff) of Felton, DE; grandson Trey Small of Dover, DE; a sister-in-law Katie Belle (Gaskins) Matthews of Berlin; and nephew Richard Small and wife Terry of Lewes, DE; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held Saturday, November 13 at 11 a.m. in Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church on Market Street in Pocomoke City. The family would like to thank the staff and management at Silver Lake Center in Dover for the compassion, love and friendship shared with Winnie, particularly Ruth Davis.
