Mrs. Desmond was born in Sargent, Nebraska on December 12, 1936, the daughter of the late Joseph Leo and Winifred Marie (Murray) Hickman. She grew up on her family's farm near Merna, Nebraska, the eldest of twelve children. She graduated from Merna High School and attended Kearney State Teacher's College in Nebraska, graduating in 1954. She moved to southern California,where she taught elementary school for seven years. While there, she married a marine... Read More	, Winifred "Winnie'' Anne (Hickman) Desmond, age 68, of Avon died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Hartford Hospital. She was the wife of Giles W. "Bud" Desmond. Mrs. Desmond was born in Sargent, Nebraska on December 12, 1936, the daughter of the late Joseph Leo and Winifred Marie (Murray) Hickman. She grew up on her family's farm near Merna, Nebraska, the eldest of twelve children. She graduated from Merna High School and attended Kearney State Teacher's College in Nebraska, graduating in 1954. She moved to southern California,where she taught elementary school for seven years. While there, she married a marine pilot, George Smith, who was killed in a plane crash shortly before their daughter, Anne, was born. In 1965, she met Giles ``Bud Desmond, and they married in 1967 and moved to Connecticut, where they have since resided. When her three children were of school age, Mrs. Desmond returned to teaching and taught at the Pine Grove Nursery School for 17 years. She also taught religious education at the Church of St. Ann, and was a key member of th St. Ann Scholarship Committee until a decline in her health occurred. She was survived by her husband and her three children--Anne Haile and her husband, Steve of Severna Park, Maryland, James Desmond of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and Catherine Eustis and her husband, Steve of Essex Junction, Vermont. She was,also, survived by nine brothers and sisters--Raymond Hickman Olympia, Washington, Donald Hickman and his wife, Pat of Omaha, Nebraska, William Hickman and his wife, Joan of Alpharetta, Georgia, Bernadine Zimbra and her husband, Rudy of Kaneohe, Hawaii, Richard Hickman and his wife, Teresa of Papillion, Nebraska, Daniel Hickman of Kaneohe, Hawaii, Michael Hickman and his wife, Anne, of Merna, Nebraska, Jo Marie Wiederholt and her husband, Barry, of Englewood, Colorado, Katherine and her husband, Fred of Mercer Island, Washington--and by five grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
