Graveside services were held here at 4-o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. Taylor, pastor of the Congregational church in Arcadia, officiating. Burial was by the grave of Mrs. Downing's husband, Charles Downing, who died five years ago. Mrs. Downing's daughter, Mrs. Irene Woody, of Cheyenne, Wyo., who had been with her mother in her last illness, and son-in-law, Alvin H. Woody, were here for the burial services, as well as a sister, Mrs. C.O. Crosthwaite, who lives here, a sister Mrs. Maude Ballenger, of Lincoln, a niece, Mrs. Lloyd Gettys of Davenport, Ia., and several friends from Arcadia and Loup City. One sister Mrs. Vida Patrick of Lincoln was unable to be present. Taken ill with anemia a year ago Mrs. Downing's health continued to fail until eight weeks ago when she was taken to the Loup City hospital where she passed away. A daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Davis, two of David City's early day residents, Ona Davis was born in this city and grew to womanhood here. After finishing her schooling she became an apprentice in the millinery department of the R.A. Bennett store later becoming a milliner and following that trade for many years. After her marriage to Charles Downing on Jul 30, 1903, she went to live in Arcadia, Mr. Downing having gone there a few years previously and established himself in business there. Arcadia remained her home for over 40 years. A son, Charles Downing, Jr., died three years ago from injuries received in an automobile accident. During her residence in Arcadia Mrs. Downing had been affiliated with the Congregational church and the societies of that church. With her warm personality and gracious manner Mrs. Downing had a great any (sic-many) sincere friends in Arcadia even as she did when a young woman in David City."
