He now stands in the presence of his Creator and Redeemer, Jesus!! Winston was preceded in death by his wife, Anna M. Carter; and son, Mark Edward. He is survived by three children and their spouses, C. Steven (Doris), C. Andrew (Debbie), and Martha Ann (Rick) Trader. Also missing him are five grandchildren, Nathan (Cassie) Trader, Hope Trader, Eric Carter, and Scott and Melissa Carter, and one great- grandson, Brayden Trader. Winston served his country in the United States Marines, and retired from the Virginia State Dept. of Rehabilitative Services. Through the years Winston, along with his wife Ann, served faithfully at Mt. Vernon Baptist, Grove Avenue Baptist, and Beaverdam Baptist Churches. Winston was known first and foremost for his constant and intentional walk with Jesus. A gentle witness was always on his lips, and his gentle spirit was at the heart of his disposition. Perhaps most amazing about Winston was his unabated daily quiet time in God's Word. Even as dementia consumed his ability to understand words and his ability to reason. Even at the level of a one year old. Even as it consumed his ability to know his wife's name, or who his children were. Even as he lost his ability to grasp the meaning of written words. Even as he lost all apparent ability to comprehend any mention of God, heaven, or Jesus, the man still, of his own accord, opened his Bible daily, and for an hour or two, poured with searching intensity over the life-giving content of God's Word. In the most incredible display of biblical truth, although his mind no longer comprehended much of anything, the spirit of the man knows his Creator, and daily the Living Word communed with the spirit of this man. Yes, Winston was an imperfect human, but of all of the testimonies man can give, Winston's life has displayed the greatest of all. That being that true fellowship with Creator God is not a walk of words or clichÂ‚s or rituals, but rather a walk of intimate fellowship that transcends the physical and the mental. To all who hold that there is no God (as if creation itself is not sufficient to convince you) had you been afforded the opportunity to witness the fellowship of Winston Carter with his Creator, when even in the final days of an all-consuming dementia, he held intimate fellowship with his Creator, in those moments you would most surely have found your way to the Living Word Himself, and to your own redemption and eternity in glory. May all who read this be humbled to repentance by the life testimony of Winston Carter. The family will receive guests at Grove Avenue Baptist Church from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday July 24, with a funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
