His great grandparents, Sanford and Rebecca Hayes, came to the Washington Territory from Iowa in the late 1850s settling at Olympia. Because the west was too wild, they returned to Iowa. Read More	OBIT: Woodrow G. (Woody) Hayes, 79, of Kittitas, died November 17, 1998 at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital in Ellensburg. His great grandparents, Sanford and Rebecca Hayes, came to the Washington Territory from Iowa in the late 1850s settling at Olympia. Because the west was too wild, they returned to Iowa. By 1881 they moved west again and settled in the Kittitas Valley. In 1882 their son James T. and his wife, Nancy, came to the valley, locating on the Dansing farm on which the town of Kittitas is located. By 1890, James had purchased and moved to the Packwood place at the corner of Denmark and Thrall Road. Woody was born in Kittitas on Dec. 23, 1918, the son of Abraham and Freda (Groger) Hayes. He was educated in the Kittitas schools, attended Central Washington University and graduated form Washington state College in 1940 with a degree in business administration. After Woody graduated, he worked in Tacoma as a bookkeeper in a lumber mill and later worked in the payroll office at the shipyards at Tacoma when war broke out in December 1941. Woody left the shipyards in 1946 and returned to Kittitas to farm in partnership with his father. He married Helen Lorine Kinkade of Ellensburg that same year and they had one child. Lorine died in 1987. Woody and Marion (Cook) Callow, Kittitas-Fairview native, were married Nov. 20, 1989, after a world war, children, grandchildren, careers and the deaths of their spouses. He served as city councilman for Kittitas for 12 years. Woody loved his Angus cattle and all of his animals. Survivors include his wife of Kittitas; son, David D. Hayes of Burbank, Calif.; stepson, J. Michael (Sara) Callow of Tacoma; stepdaughter, Patricia (Bill) Krieger of Gig Harbor; five step-grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. His wife, Helen, and son John (1964) preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the CMA Church in Ellensburg with Pastor Tim Owen officiating. Burial will follow at High Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Friends, 302 E. Second Ave., Ellensburg, WA 98926. Ellensburg Daily Record, November 18, 1988
