Woodrow “Woodie” James Collins was born Aug. 7, 1923, at Meadow Grove, the son of Elijah and Ida (Hale) Collins. He grew up on the farm south of Meadow Grove and attended District 52 School. Woodie graduated from Meadow Grove High School in 1941 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On June 8, 1947, Woodie married Marjorie Wagner at Faith United Methodist Church in Tilden. They are the parents of Kathy and Lane. He was a cattle feeder and spent his life farming. Woodie was an ambassador of Ak-Sar-Ben, president of Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association and president of Madison County Feeder’s Association. Woodie served as a national director of the Cattlemen’s Association. He was also a member of the Meadow Grove and Norfolk Methodist Church, where he served several offices. Woodie was a charter member of the Meadow Grove Lion’s Club, Madison County Soil and Water Conservation Board, District 52 School Board and was leader of Heights 4-H Club for many years. Woodie and Marjorie traveled extensively, and he was an avid golfer. They retired and moved to Norfolk in 1995. Woodie is survived by his spouse, Marjorie of Norfolk; daughter Kathy (Jon) Strong of St. Louis, Mo.; son Lane (Rhonda) Collins of Meadow Grove; grandchildren Quinn Strong, Abbey Strong, Jill (James) Jacobs and Ben (Callan) Collins; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Kate; sisters Geniveve McCue and Rubee (Don) Parlett of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mildred Underwood and Lo Gene Preddy; and brother Everett Collins.
