Woodrow was born January 3, 1919 at Winding Gulf in Raleigh County, WV and was a son of the late John Matthew and Stella Sharp Shirkey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bill" Shirkey of Madison and and one sister, Edith Flannery of Clothier. Read More	Woodrow Wilson "Dedo" Shirkey of Clothier, WV departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior on May 27, 2008. Woodrow was born January 3, 1919 at Winding Gulf in Raleigh County, WV and was a son of the late John Matthew and Stella Sharp Shirkey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bill" Shirkey of Madison and and one sister, Edith Flannery of Clothier. He lived a very full 89 years, 68 with the love of his life, Emma "Ruth" Stollings Shirkey. Woodrow was a devoted Christian, a member, Elder, and Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He was a member of the Clothier Presbyterian Church since childhood. He spent all of his working life (46) years at Sharples Coal Company. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Shirkey; two sons, John P. Shirkey and wife Kista of Turtle Creek and Gary Wayne Shirkey of Ottawa; grandsons, Devin Michael Shirkey of North Myrtle Beach, SC, John Matthew "Matt" Shirkey and wife Melanie of Low Gap Road, Turtle Creek; and step-grandson, Jamie F. Ball of Charleston; one precious great-grandson, Nathan Alex Shirkey also of Low Gap Road; two brothers, John L. Shirkey of Cleveland, Ohio and George C. Shirkey of Madison and Lake Wales, Fla; three sisters, Rosemary Miller of Madison, Phyllis Smith of Ripley and Frances Price of Gordon, WV; and many nieces and nephews and a special sister-in-law, Hazel Turner of Clothier. He will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by many. Services will be 2 pm Friday, May 30 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with the Rev. Charles Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
