Description	:	Wyatt Hayes was the son of Rice and Elizabeth (Cook) Hayes. He was reared by Clara Fairchild (Find A Grave Memorial# 79987643) and Rachel (Fairchild) Smith (Find A Grave Memorial# 21014311) from the time he was 4 years old when his mother died. He was married to Mary Jane Coffey on Aug. 24, 1865. Wyatt served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on March 15, 1862 in Company B, 37th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. The following was sent to me by FAG contributor, C. Fairchild. According to "legend" that has passed down in the Fairchild, as well as this particular Hayes family, is that Wyatt's parents lived either on the next land grant over (which way I've not researched) or close by at any rate. When the mother, Elizabeth Cook, passed away in 1846 when Wyatt was only four years old, apparently his father felt he could not raise him and Clara and Rachel took Wyatt in and raised him. This branch of the Wyatts confirms this and also that Clara and Rachel made a deal with Wyatt as he got older that he would inherit their land (the original Ebenezer Fairchild land grant), if he would allow them to live there until their passing and bury them in the family cemetery, which should actually be named the Fairchild-Hayes Cemetery.
