Mrs. Ashburn was born Sept. 21, 1906 in Decatur county, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McDowell. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Roberta Jean Ashburn; three sisters, Neva Binning, of Santa Fe, N.M., Mrs. B.A. Daun of Creston and Mrs. Floyd Shelton of Olgilvie, Minn.; four brothers, Rolland of Independence, Mo., Lester of Grand River, Pete of Van Wert and George McDowell of Mora, Minn. and her parents of Grand River. She moved to Creston from Grand River in 1932 and has made her home here since that time. Funeral arrangements are pending word from relatives. The accident occurred at her residence in the Willis apartments, 202 North Oak Street, when an oil stove flared up. Mrs. Ashburn, who was visiting upstairs, rushed into her kitchen just as her husband and Bert Thompson, another roomer, were carrying out the flaming stove. As she stooped to pick up a rug in front of the back door, afraid that the men might slip, oil and flames from the stove poured down over her neck and shoulders. Although the men immediately rolled her up in a rug, she received first degree burns on her neck and shoulders and second degree burns on her arms and hands. The fire department arrived on the scene just as neighbors had extinguished the flames in the room. Chief P. H. Hannan used a first aid kit carried on the truck to administer treatment to Mrs. Ashburn until a doctor arrived. Although painfully burned, she was able to walk to the car which took her to the hospital.
