Yvonne joins her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert (Bob) Marsh, who died in July 2011. Yvonne Marsh died peacefully Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at the home of her daughter, Diane (Marsh) Beach in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Yvonne joins her beloved husband of 65 years, Robert (Bob) Marsh, who died in July 2011. Yvonne was born on July 20, 1926, near Archer, Neb., at the homestead farm of her parents, Lloyd Immel and Lillian Katherine (Condell) Nitzel. She helped her mother raise her younger brother, Dale, and helped her dad with the many chores around the family farm. Her mother made sure that Yvonne not only learned domestic skills, but also taught her piano, a skill and gift which Yvonne would later pass on to all three of her children. She attended the Gardner Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Central City High School as the salutatorian of her class. She attended the University of Nebraska's Ag College for one year, majoring in home economics. She then taught one year at District 38, a one-room school in Merrick County. The Nitzel family farm was a short distance from Bob's home, the Marion and Belle Marsh farm. Yvonne and Bob grew up together, attending the same schools and Fairview Methodist (Episcopal) Church. At age 19, Yvonne married Bob on April 7, 1946, at a small family ceremony in her parents' house. Yvonne and Bob started farming near St. Libory, Neb., where Diane was born in 1947 and son Richard in 1952. In 1954, the family moved to a farm outside of Ravenna, Neb., where son, Thomas was born in 1956. It was in Ravenna where Yvonne began to instill the value of a college education in each of her children, and where she started her long career as a piano teacher. During her children's school years, she was an active parent engaged in leading PTA, Scouts and 4-H. She and Bob chaperoned Diane and the Ravenna High School band when it performed at the Seattle World's Fair. In 1964, the family moved to Grand Island where Yvonne continued to teach an extensive list of piano students. She was active in many professional piano organizations and later became a National Music Teacher Association Adjudicator. She often played gigs at area venues such as accompanying for local musicals and playing at the Liedekrantz with Bob and boys as her road crew. Diane graduated from Grand Island High, attended Hastings College, and graduated from Indiana University with a major in music, eventually receiving her masters. In 1970, the family moved to Rensselaer, Ind., where Richard graduated from high school as salutatorian and then graduated from Northwestern University and law school at Chicago-Kent. In 1971, Yvonne and Bob moved to Webster City, Iowa. The Webster City home was Yvonne's favorite with many parties and remodeling projects. She continued teaching piano with one of her students going on to play with the national tours of Broadway musicals. Yvonne supplemented income working as a travel guide and made sure that she and Bob took advantage of her connections with trips to Ireland, mainland Europe, El Salvador and other places. They enjoyed hosting Hans Rudolph, a German foreign exchange student. Tom graduated from high school in Webster City and then received an engineering degree from Iowa State University and law school at the University of Iowa. In 1984, Yvonne and Bob moved to Littleton, Colo., joining Tom, Rich and their families. The four granddaughters arrived, blessing and enriching the life of their grandmother. Yvonne and Bob attended nearly every milestone event, dance or piano recitals, school programs and athletic contests. Yvonne even subbed as surrogate parent for the girls' busy mothers. Yvonne particularly enjoyed having the granddaughters over alone or together for special days and activities. They hosted all major holidays at their home with Christmas as Yvonne's favorite for cooking and decorating the house. Yvonne and Bob were active members at Littleton UMC. They sang in the church choir and with the Littleton Chorale. Yvonne joined P.E.O. and became an officer. In 2006, health circumstances took Yvonne and Bob to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they initially lived in assisted living facilities. In 2008, Diane and Al later opened their home to Yvonne and Bob to provide the care they needed and the opportunity for the two of them to enjoy each other's presence. As Yvonne's Alzheimer's progressed, she turned more and more to Bob for companionship. These years were hard, but precious for all concerned. Yvonne is survived by: children, Diane (Alan), Richard (Kay), and Thomas (Denise); four granddaughters, Alexa Larson (Mark), Madelyn Marsh, Natalie Marsh and Ariana Marsh; her brother, Dale Nitzel (Wauneta) and their children, Scott (Meredith), Grant (Deb), Carmen (Bryan), and Greg (Jen); Diane's stepdaughter, Lori (Jim), and stepgrandchildren, Evan, Thomas and Jenna; and numerous Nitzel, Condell, Marsh and Mesner relatives. Yvonne was preceded in death by: husband, Bob, parents, and two brothers-in-law. Burial was in the Burke Cemetery, Central City, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on January 3, 2012
