Description	:	Yvonne E. Gray, 91, of Norwalk, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:21 p.m. March 16, 2020 at Regency Care Center in Norwalk. She was born December 9, 1928 in Eddyville to Verne and Mary L. Barnett Binns. She married Dale E. Gray in Eddyville on August 17, 1947. He preceded her in death October 21, 2017. She married Dale E. Gray in Eddyville on August 17, 1947. He preceded her in death October 21, 2017. A 1946 graduate of Eddyville High School, Yvonne earned a degree in elementary education from Graceland University in Lamoni. She started teaching in a one-room rural schoolhouse, taught 2 years at Plummer School, 3 years at High Point School, substituted many years for Ottumwa School District and taught 3 years for Central Decatur School District. She then taught at Douma Elementary where she coached track and girls basketball, winning the city girls elementary basketball tournament. She later taught 5th and 6th grades at Lincoln Elementary from where she retired. She was a member of Willard Street United Methodist Church where she led Kids' Club for 10 years, taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school, coordinated funeral dinners and, along with her husband, started the Merry Homemakers group. Yvonne was a member of the United Methodist Women, holding the office of President and District Officer. She belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, Kings' Daughters, and PEO Chapter CG where she served as chaplain. She was known for cooking, baking her cream puffs, pies and desserts. Surviving is her daughter, Alison (Steven) McElroy of Norwalk; 3 grandchildren, Keisha (Wesley) Long of Winter Park, FL, Grayson McElroy of Norwalk, and Rileigh McElroy of West Des Moines; 2 great-grandchildren, Makena and Bob; siblings, Marilyn Schnieder of Clinton, Glenda (Lee) Gibson of Dallas Center, Kay Boer of Jefferson, Vernon "Buzz" (Connie) Binns, Jr. of Hamilton, OH, Darc (Roger) Noel of Grinnell, Kent Binns of Gila Bend, AZ, and Vonz (Merle) Odem-Cox of Adel; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter and son-in-law, Angela and David Lange, a sister, Veneta Binns, and a brother, Jimmy Binns. Private graveside services and burial will take place in Highland Cemetery in Eddyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church.
