Zachary "Zack" Taylor Sr., a waterman for more than 65 years and a familiar figure over the years at the annual Chesapeake Bay skipjack races, is dead at the age of 77. Capt. Taylor died Monday in Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore after undergoing two open heart operations within 24 hours. Born here, he was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Taylor. He owned his first boat at the age of 12 and had followed the water from then until failing health forced him into retirement in 1972. In 1976 he won first place in the skipjack race as the skipper aboard "The Kathryn," the boat of his brother-in-law, Johnny Parkinson of Wenona. Capt. Taylor won a number of trophies and cups in skipjack races in the Deal Island-Crisfield area as well as the upper Chesapeake Bay almost continuously fom 1964 through 1976. According to his family, he had been looking forward to participating in the Deal Island skipjack races this Labor Day weekend. He was a member of Walker Memorial Church of God in Princess Anne and over the years he had been active in a number of watermen's associations. He and his wife, Nora Mae Parkinson Taylor, observed their 55th wedding anniversary July 15. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are six children, Estelle Horner and Michael and Wayne Taylor, Wenona, Zack Taylor Jr., Salisbury, Dickie Taylor, Chance, and Pearl Vantrease, Oriole; 28 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a ister , Etta Carter, Wenona; four brothers, Elmer Taylor, Deal Island, Granville Taylor, Ocean City, and John and William "Bill" Taylor, Wenona; and several nieces and nephews. Three deceased children were Warren Taylor, Wenona, Hardon Taylor, Melbourne, Fla., and Rebecca Taylor, Allen. Funeral services will be held here at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillips Morris and the Rev. Dewey Crockett. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Webster Funeral Home, Deal Island after 7 o'clock tonight. (The Daily Times, Wednesday, 30 August 1978, p. 23)
