Ravalli Republic, August 16, 2002; Hamilton, Ravalli County, Montana ------------------ Bio information received 9/25/2020 : Zella Katherine Nefzger Campbell Sharp, 89, passed away Aug. 7, 2002, at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow. Zella was born Oct. 12, 1913, at Vida to Katie and Dick Nefzger, in a "soddy" house where they as homesteaders lived until their main house could be built the following year. She will be put to her final rest in the Vida Cemetery on land that her grandparents donated to the little town, which was also named after her Aunt Vida. Zella graduated from Wolf Point High School in 1933, where she worked for her room and board to be able to go to high school during the years of the Great Depression. She met her future husband there, Mike Campbell, a dashing young man who stole her heart. They were married Nov. 24, 1933, in Wolf Point where they farmed and ranched north of town until they bought out his folk's place there and began their own ranch. They raised their three children there until selling and moving to the Bitterroot Valley in 1956, where Mike became a well-known cattle buyer. They owned the Ponderosa Bar for several years. Mike died April 15, 1987. She met Harvey B. Sharp at the Eagles Lodge in Hamilton in early 1989 and they were married Nov. 1, 1989 in Las Vegas. Harvey passed away Dec. 10, 2001, in Yuma, Ariz., their winter home. They had 11 very happy years together. They traveled extensively and belonged to a number of groups that kept them dancing the years away, which they enjoyed right up until Harvey's death and Zella's illness becoming worse to the point where she had to enter a nursing home in Glasgow. Zella suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Zella was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, and was quite active in her younger years, teaching Sunday school for several years as well. She was a life member of the Eagles Auxiliary in Hamilton for over 45 years, and was on the lady's drill team during the late 1950s and the 1960s. She also was active in the Golden Agers, and the 5-Valley Accordion Association; she and Harvey traveled to many dances around western Montana. They both loved to dance and Zella always said that the "day that she had to give up dancing" was the "day that she'd just curl up and die." She worked for several years for Ford's Federated in Hamilton. She managed a motel in Missoula for a year before she packed up and went back to her beloved Bitterroot Valley. Zella was a wonderful cook, learning from her mother and older sisters on the farm in eastern Montana. She came from a large family who grew nearly all of their own food besides cooking for farm help. When she married she took on the responsibility of cooking for their ranch crews as well as her own and her in-laws and great in-laws for a time. She raised a huge garden along with having babies and being a full-time wife, mother, nursemaid, cook at large and all the outside work it all involved as well. She was the very best mother that any one could have ever hoped to have, she was always "there" for her kids and would always listen and always tried to be fair among us, and she never stopped and did the same with her 13 grandchildren and her great-grandchildren as well. Her children, who all survive her, are Kay (Clayton) Long of Glasgow and Coleen and Clay Campbell of California. The grandchildren are Rock, Jay Jess, Les and Steve Long and their families; Fritz Krantz of Idaho and Josh Krantz of California; Naomi Edwards of California; Chris, Joe, Cade, Beau and Chrystal of Hamilton; C.J. and Randi Campbell of California, with a great-grandson Anthony Jacks in Missoula and Lani Garsjo of Bozeman. Also surviving her are sisters, Fern Garding of Havre, Beulah Brown of Wyoming, brothers Deane Nefzger of Glendive, Bob Nefzger of Vida; her three stepchildren, Bruce Sharp of Hamilton, Priscilla of Bozeman, Denise of Nevada along with many nieces and nephews including Rob Garding of Stevensville. A memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Hamilton at the Daly-Leach Chapel. Final placement of the urn will be at the Vida Cemetery on Aug. 31, 2002. The family suggests memorials to Alzheimer's Research in Zella's name.
