She moved with her family to Iowa in 1913, and lived in the vicinity of Norwood. On Feb. 23, 1924, she married Lemley P. Curtis. In their early married years her husband nicknamed her Sally. Daughter of John Henry German and Jane Eliza "Janie" Hosier OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, March 6, 1990 ZELMA CURTIS Zelma Eva German, devoted mother of Helen, was born in Holt County, Mo., Dec. 11, 1903. She moved with her family to Iowa in 1913, and lived in the vicinity of Norwood. On Feb. 23, 1924, she married Lemley P. Curtis. In their early married years her husband nicknamed her Sally. She has been "Grandma Sally" to three grandsons: Jerry, Craig and Todd, and to seven great-grandchildren: Mark, Chad, Scott, Luke, Tara, Jacob and Cameron Craig. "Grandma Sally" graduated from Norwood High School and taught school for several years. She and Lemley lived on a farm all their married life near New Virginia and Chariton. After Lemley's death, she lived in an apartment in Chariton before going to the Chariton Manor in 1985. She was devoted to her family and will be missed by Helen and husband Don Willis, Jerry and wife Gloria, Todd and wife Debi and granddaughter-in-law Elizabeth Willis. She is also survived by one sister, Leota, 95 years old, who resides in Des Moines. Greeting her in the valley of peace are Lemley, grandson Craig, an infant great-granddaughter, her parents, John and Jane German, and nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 24, 1990, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Hambleton officiating. Interment was in the Norwood Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Scott Willis, Mark Willis, Chad Willis, Brian Snuggs, Mark Fedson and Lee Sandy. Serving as honorary bearers were Gene Burgett and Don McFarland.
